It's Britney Bitch! The Gay Appeal of Ms Spears

Pop culture train wreck or one of the world's greatest artists? You decide. But like her or hate her, there's no denying the gay appeal of Britney Spears. Just ask rabid fan Alasdair Duncan. 

I like to consider myself a rounded, rational and relatively sane adult, but here's the thing - I'm also a rabid Britney Spears fan. I'm not exactly thrilled about that, but there it is. A lot of gay guys I know are the same way - otherwise level-headed individuals who hold down grown-up jobs and cast a cynical eye over the detritus of pop culture who abandon all restraint and common sense at the mere utterance of 'oh bay-bey bay-bey, how was I supposed to know?' My boyfriend is the only one I know who pretends to be immune to this particular sirens call, but I'm working on breaking him down, by playing choice cuts from the singles collection until he finally gives in. I'll let you know how that goes, but in the meantime, the question if clear: why the hell is Britney Spears so damn fascinating to gay dudes? 

For me at least, part of the appeal is the narrative that threads through her pop career, it's so deliberately-wrought, it could be a novel. Well, okay, maybe not a novel, but definitely a cable series - something edgy, like you might find on Showtime. Early single like Sometimes presented Britney as a naive girl, curious about the possibility of adult sexuality, not quite ready to jump in, even if the Baby One More Time video made it clear this might not be for long. As she grew up in the public eye, she shed her girlhood with a series of calculated musical gestures, moving from titillating but still somewhat wholesome teen pop of Oops! I Did It Again to the grinding, club-ready come-on, I'm a Slave 4 U. When she freaked out and suffered an epic public meltdown, there were songs to address that too, not least of all the paparazzi-baiting Piece Of Me. The story of Britney's pop career is essentially the story of an innocent being corrupted by the big bad world. It's not all that nice a story, but it's dramatic, and we gay dudes definitely appreciate a little drama. 

Part of it may also be a consequence of said epic public meltdown. From 2006 through to pretty much the present day, it's been hard to read a gossip website - and really, what else are you going to do to kill time at work? - without some mention of Britney Spears latest exploit. There she was falling in love with a noxious, backwards cap-wearing back-up dancer, only to have her southern heart smashed into a million tiny pieces; there she was again going on a bender, getting sloppy drunk and flashing her most intimate parts at photographers. That's to say nothing of Britney chopping off all her hair and being carted off to rehab on a stretcher, or the various unsavoury producers and hangers-on who came forward to see sex stories to the tabloids. The story is ongoing, but so is her career, and that's kind of the point. Britney Spears has made a career of being a survivor, and for gay dudes who might have spent a not-inconsiderable chuck of their lives feeling marginalised, if not outright persecuted, there's a specific and powerful resonance to that story. 

Not least of all, there's the music. Feel free to be sceptical if you want, but Britney's phenomenal run of singles has been written and produced by some of the canniest minds in pop, from Swedish hit-makers Max Martin and Bloodshy & Avant through to The Neptunes and Nate 'Danjahandz' Hills. There is no listening to tracks like Toxic and Piece Of Me without appreciating that, whether or not Britney's delivery is you're thing, they're really, really, well-constructed songs. Her latest album, Femme Fatale, arrived last month, produced by Martin along with sinister-pop-genius-of-the-moment, Dr Luke. It leaked well ahead of its release date, but being the upstanding citizen I am, I did the right thing and fronted up to JB Hi-Fi when it came out. And it's pretty great - a hook-filled and damn-near-irrestible collection of tracks. Man cannot live by pop songs alone, but trying to resist them is futile. Is my appreciation of Britney Spears perhaps a little blinkered, keeping me from coming to grips with the tackier elements of her music and public persona? Possibly. Will I still be following Ms Spears well into her dotage? Almost definitely.

Google Searches Suggests "James Middleton Gay"

The search engine Google has begun to auto-suggest "James Middleton gay" following a surge in searches on the younger brother of Catherine 'Kate', Duchess of Cambridge. Mr Middleton, who is a cake designer, gave a reading yesterday at the marriage of his sister to Prince William. As soon as he began to speak, hundreds of people asked on Twitter and other social media networks if he is gay. There is no evidence to suggest that he is. An increase in searches on Google for the term "James Middleton gay" has led to the search engine auto-suggesting the term when a user begins to type his name. 

Google's suggested terms are driven by the volume of people querying a particular term as opposed to an algorithm or editorial involvement by the company. In 2006, the search engine auto-suggested "Ashley Cole gay" when users searched for his name. The spike in traffic relating to Cole coincided with his legal battle with the News of the World that wrongly implied that he was involved in a gay sex incident with a well known DJ. 

The social traffic media relating to Mr Middleton today has included users sharing photographs of him partying in one of his sisters dresses and another dressed as a French maid. A third photograph shows him naked aside from a strategically places bottle of beer. The Daily Telegraph reports that last month Mr Middleton posted a photograph on his Facebook page showing "four men, backs to the camera, with their trousers around their ankles and bottoms on show standing on a country road called Back Lane."

Wishing a Tres Fab Birthday to Josh Hartnett

American actor Josh Hartnett turns 33-years-old today. Born in San Francisco, California, he has three younger half-siblings named Jessica, Jack and Joe. He attended Cretin-Derham Hall High School before switching to South High School in Minneapolis, from which he graduated in 1996. Hartnett was active in sports as a child, especially football, and did not entertain the thought of becoming a performer, until an injury left him unable to participate on the athletic playing field. A relative encouraged him to audition for a stage production of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn and to his surprise, he won the part of Huckleberry Finn. Now in love with the stage, he went on to star in a slew of high school plays. Hartnett got his first job at a local video store. He also worked at McDonalds and Burger King for a short time before getting his start acting at Youth Performance Company in Minneapolis. After finishing high school, a move to New York to attend the prestigious Conservatory of Theatre Arts and Film at SUNY Purchase did not go as well as he had hoped for, and a year later at age 19, Hartnett found himself in California.

Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, he caught an improbable break, landing a part in the short-lived but acclaimed drama Cracker, on ABC. "We made 16 episodes of Cracker and I loved doing show, but unfortunately no one was watching us." He had, however, made himself known. He then performed in small plays and on national television commercials before being cast in his first feature film, playing the son of Jamie Lee Curtis' character in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, released in 1998, it performed well at the box office. Hartnett has since developed a steady film career, having appeared in many Hollywood films, including Pearl Harbour (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001), 40 Days and 40 Nights (2002), Wicker Park (2004), Sin City (2005), The Wrong Man (2006) and August (2008). "I'm trying to choose scrips by character, " Josh explains. "I'm not so worried about creating a career. I want to create good roles, because I want to be the best actor I can be."

In the early 2000's, Harnett was approached several times to play the role of Clark Kent/Superman in the upcoming film - at the time helmed by Brett Ratner - but always turned it down, not wanting to commit to a predicted ten-year role. More recently, he's starred in Bunraku (2010), Girls Walks Into a Bar (2011) and Stuck Between Station (2011), and is due to appear in the upcoming movies Singularity and Dark Star Hollow. "We're all on a journey," says Josh. "The average American switches professions four times. I'm lucky to be in a business where I can change the character I am playing every couple of months."

Josh became a vegetarian at the age of 12 - though he did eat meat during the shooting of The Black Dahlia for his role as a boxer - and was voted the sexiest vegetarian in the world by PETA in 2003. In 2008, he starred in a campaign for Emporio Armani fragrance, 'Diamonds for Men', being featured in both print and television ads for the fragrance, thus becoming the first male celebrity to represent Giogio Armani Beauty. Josh has also featured on many magazine covers over the years, such as Details, Entertainment Weekly, Vanity Fair, GQ and Vman, in addition to being in other magazines like Vogue, People, Glamour and InStyle. Josh dated his childhood sweetheart until the two decided to go their separate ways, and more recently dated Scarlett Johansson for a couple of years. "I've had my heart broken, and it's not fun," he explains. "But I'd rather have my heart broken then break someone else's heart."

Tom Hardy: The 'Men of Warrior' Portraits

Check out a shirtless Tom Hardy in these portraits for the book The Men of Warrior. The pics were shot by Lionsgate's president of theatrical marketing, Tim Palen, for the studio's upcoming film Warrior, co-starring Tom and Joel Edgerton, according to NYMag's Vulture blog (where you can also see some more pics). The drama, in which the two actors will play brothers who go head to head in the world of mixed martial arts, will be released September 9, with The Men of Warrior book hitting bookshelves August 9.

Britney to Porn: Transformation of Chris Crocker

Remember Chris Crocker? He's the androgynous twink who once made a weepy, shouty YouTube please for people to Leave Britney Alone! Now, Zack Sire at The Sword says that Crocker needs to pack on 20 pounds of muscle before he's porn hot ... and Zack is right. But remember, plenty of now hot porn stars started out as a skinner twink. Seeing how hot Chris has become since his Leave Britney Alone days, we're sure he'll only improve with age. Of course, Crocker also has fans who support the idea. "I don't get how people can say they used to love your videos but now they're so disappointed or pissed or whatever now that you are posting nudes. You'd think if they were actually fans of your video's they'd be able to grasp what you've been saying all along - accept yourself, be who you are, do what you want to do, don't give a f**k what others think.
