Please tell us about yourself. What is your name? Where do you live? What makes you tick?
My name is Rosanna Paola Pereyra and I am originally from Uruguay and now living in sunny South Florida. I would have to say making things makes me tick.
When did you start making dolls? Why did you start making dolls?
I made my first sock doll when I was around 5 years old in school. I started making them again as an adult because I wanted to give friends and family a gift that was one of a kind and made just for them.
Who or what influences you? Inspires you?
I am influenced by the colors in fashion and the change of seasons. Inspiration is everywhere for me! I can find it in a song, a movie, a book, even a piece of fabric.
Tell us a little about your dolls and your process for making them. Materials, preliminary sketches, inspiration, etc.
I always start out with an idea of what I want to express then I make an inspiration board with all of the pictures, fabrics, lyrics and colors that I feel will help bring the idea to life. I gather all of the materials I will need and begin with the armature and I mix clay colors to get the skin tone I need.
I begin sculpting the dolls face. Once I'm happy with the face, its onto the body and last is the small details of fingers and toes or fins and wings depending on the doll. I do multiple bakings and I smooth out the clay as much as possible to avoid having to sand too much.
After the final bake, comes the best part, painting!! I paint the doll with several washes of acrylics and oil paints to bring it to life. I then bake again to set the paints. Then its onto wigging and costuming and in some cases the furniture or environment that the doll will be in.
Do you have a favorite doll? It can be handmade by you, handmade by someone else, or even (gasp) mass production.
I dont really have a favorite but I sometimes like my comical characters like Ms.Whisolbautum and Bad JUJU more than my pretty dolls.
Besides making dolls, what do you do? Job, other creative pursuits, hobbies, etc.
I am part owner of a home remodeling/restoration services company. I'm a 3D illustrator and a I am also a crafter, I make jewelry, build miniature sets, paper arts and love mixed media crafts. I also wrote a children's book that I am trying to get published.
What are some of your favorite: movies, books, websites, magazines, foods, TV shows, music? (Any or all!)
Movies-I loved Pan's Labyrinth, What Dreams may Come, Underworld, Ponyo, Inception, Knowing
